Gaps in Your Career History Don’t Define You — But How You Share Your Story Can
Many professional women of color I work with feel uncertain or self-conscious when explaining career gaps. Whether it’s in interviews, networking conversations, or professional discussions, this part of their career story can feel like a heavy weight to carry.
But it doesn’t have to be.
Your career gap is only one part of your story, and the way you share it can empower you rather than hold you back.
Rethinking Career Gaps
A recent conversation I had with a recruiter offered a refreshing perspective:
Career gaps aren’t the automatic red flags they once were. 🚩
It’s been said that over half of working professionals have experienced a career gap. This can include career breaks for reasons such as:
Burnout recovery
Caregiving responsibilities
Job loss and career transitions
Exploring new paths or upskilling
What often gets overlooked is the growth and value gained during these periods.
Perhaps you developed new skills, volunteered, pursued personal development, or gained clarity on your next steps.
That time has value.
So, the issue is not the gap itself but how you share your experience during that time that truly matters. ✅
You Control the Narrative
The key is framing your story with clarity and confidence. Here’s how you can start:
Acknowledge the gap without apology: Focus on the positive actions you took during that time.
Highlight growth: Share how the experiences during your gap expanded your skills, resilience, or clarity.
Connect the dots: Show how those learnings prepare you for your next opportunity and make you a great fit.
When you share your career story authentically, you take control of the narrative and can frame in a positive light.
